Senior Underwriter

Job Introduction

Underwriting is at the heart of everything that MPS does, it sets the appetite for risk within the organisation and helps ensure we grow our business in a sustainable way. The Underwriting team exist to help grow the business whilst ensuring member funds are protected by identifying, mitigating, and reducing the risks that the business is exposed to.

We are excited to introduce two new crucial roles to the underwriting team; we are looking for two strategic and experienced leaders to join us as a Senior Underwriter for UK and Ireland members and a Senior Underwriter for International members. This is an exciting opportunity for those who enjoy working in an environment that has the discipline of an insurer but with the focus on the member. 

As a Senior Underwriter, you will develop the underwriting strategy for members of MPS. This will include developing innovative underwriting solutions to complex problems facing current and prospective members, turning that into underwriting strategy & policy, leading the team responsible for the implementation of underwriting policy, along with the operational management of member queries, referrals etc.

Role Responsibility

  • Develop & deliver underwriting strategy for relevant business line
  • Plan and direct underwriting procedures for individual memberships in respective business line
  • Review consistency of underwriting decisions
  • Support relevant Head of Underwriting & Pricing in setting and delivering Key Performance Indicators and overseeing the delivery of company plan
  • Specify and review regular reports on reviews of member, cases, and claims information for identification of potential underwriting actions
  • Establish a culture and capability in Lean / continuous improvement to drive operational efficiency and great member experiences and outcomes
  • Provide inspirational leadership to ensure the training, competence, performance, and engagement of the team
  • Empower and enable your team to make good, commercial underwriting decisions while putting the member at the heart of these decisions
  • Understand and champion a risk management appetite in role and with the team

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have sound knowledge of underwriting management and operations, with a solid foundation of underwriting skills which has likely been gained from working within an underwriting, risk environment or similar exposure to operating in a regulated environment.

You will have demonstrable experience of setting underwriting strategy and supporting business growth. You’re someone who can not only see the ‘big picture’ but can envision and clearly communicate the plan to get there. Utilising your aptitude of driving/implementing change and excellent stakeholder management skills, you naturally create a culture of continuous improvement.  

As this is a People Manager role, we are looking for someone with exceptional leadership skills and experience in leading and motivating a team. 

It would be amazing if you had medical or medical malpractice underwriting experience or are accustomed to working in one or more of the international territories that MPS operates in.
