Medicolegal Consultant

Please Note: The application deadline for this job has now passed.

Job Introduction

MPS have been supporting members for almost 100 years, and today we have around around 300,000 members!

We are excited to introduce a fantastic opportunity for a Doctor with a keen interest in medical law to join our expanding team as a Medicolegal Consultant (MLC).

The Member Cases and Claims (MCC) division is at the forefront of protecting the careers, reputation, and financial risk of members worldwide and, as a Medicolegal Consultant, you will provide advice and support to medical members based in the UK who are facing medicolegal and ethical issues.

Other key aspects of the role include involvement in marketing and education activities such as presenting at conferences, training events and the delivery of webinars/seminars.

The MLC role is a position with significant responsibility and requires a dynamic individual who can manage a varied and, at times, demanding workload.

Role Responsibility

  • Advising members by telephone and written correspondence on a wide variety of medicolegal and ethical issues. This can include, but is not limited to, patient complaints, coroner’s inquests, disciplinary matters, regulatory investigations, and claims.
  • Investigating and evaluating cases affecting members where there may be a wide spectrum of potential risks to members’ professional standing.
  • Making regular case-handling decisions, such as when to instruct panel solicitors, considering the requirements of the individual case and member.
  • Working collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team and contribute to delivering on team targets, ensuring cases are handled effectively, efficiently while minimising costs.
  • As a technical expert, provide support to members of the team, taking the opportunity to coach, train and advise to continually improve the quality of service we provide members.
  • The role is dynamic with opportunities to work with a wide range of areas of the business offering medicolegal expertise. This will likely include activities such as delivering education via webinar, lectures, or workshops, and working with our communications team in preparing articles or case reports for internal publication or in the trade / national media.
  • Be available for escalation and interaction with members where medicolegal advice is required – this could be via internal escalation from a colleague/team, direct contact from the member (including taking part in the telephone consultation record (TCR) rota during and out of hours) or via internal and external stakeholders.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is passionate about supporting and protecting Doctors. Taking your clinical expertise and knowledge/interest in medical law, you are ready to embark on a new career in a dynamic, fast paced company that puts members at the heart of everything they do.

You will have a graduate and, ideally, postgraduate medical degree and/or diploma and need to be fully registered and licensed with the recognised regulator within your relevant jurisdiction (e.g. the GMC).

You will have a clear understanding of the legal and ethical principles that apply in the UK.

Excellent communication and confident presentation skills as well as being able to effectively build and maintain positive stakeholder relationships are all essential to the role.

This is a truly rewarding role where each day is different, and you have the unique ability to make a huge impact on members' lives.

We welcome applicants from all backgrounds, and we encourage you to apply even if you feel you do not match 100% of the technical requirements. We celebrate diversity, promote inclusivity and strive to create a work environment which ensures everyone can be heard.

About the Company

Medical Protection Society (MPS) is the world’s leading protection organisation for Doctors, Dentists and healthcare professionals. We protect and support the professional interests of almost 300,000 Members around the world, in countries as diverse as the United Kingdom, South Africa and Hong Kong.

We are a not-for-profit organisation, meaning our Members’ premiums are either invested into bettering the organisation, its employees and our products, or kept safe should our Members require support for complaints or claims arising from professional practice.

Our philosophy is to support safe practice in medicine and dentistry by helping to avert problems in the first place. We also actively campaign for regulatory and legal reforms that benefit Members and the wider healthcare professions.

To do this, we need colleagues who are trusted and supported to deliver their best work, whether that be through leadership development, fully-funded training courses or peer-to-peer support. We want our colleagues to feel empowered enough to deliver positive change, display ambition to push themselves and are determined when faced with a challenge, whilst ensuring our Member’s best interests are at the core.
