Lead Data Warehouse Developer

Role Responsibility

JOB PURPOSE

 

The role holder will be responsible for the day-to-day management of a small number of experienced Data warehouse developers, setting tasks with the Data Manager and ensuring that software principles are applied and adhered to.

 

To assist in the maintenance, development and improvement of the MPS data warehouse. To include the analysis of business and technical requirements, and following decisions of management at each stage, design, implement, test, document and maintain solutions.


 

Specific activities included:

 

  • Conceptualise and design complex ETL solutions
  • Perform as active, leading role in shaping and enhancing overall ETL ODS architecture
  • Ensure high availability and expected levels of performance of the databases that support the core systems within the company
  • Suggest areas where processes need improvement or further design to support efficient and high quality delivery to our customers
  • Deliver regular and ad-hoc operational management information (MI) to all of M
  • To proactively seek ways of further improving the key activities of the team, including:

 

- The quality, accuracy and fitness for purpose of project deliverables

- The quality and range of database administration related services provided by the team, both internally and to other business units, primarily the Information and Analysis department.
 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • To have oversight of day to day activities of a number of DWH developers
  • Line management and mentoring for team of DWH developers
  • Shape and promote best practices throughout the DWH  development function
  • Identify areas for improvement across the DWH development team and 3rd party providers (currently Sapiens)
  • Take the lead role in the design, build and management of a dimensionally-modelled data warehouse for a rapidly evolving and growing company
  • Define standards for the data warehouse, the integration/migration strategy for data, and data structure conventions
  • Assess and recommend changes / improvements too proposed database technologies or options
  • Leverage the company’s Microsoft-based BI solutions to deliver automated segmentation and analysis capability
  • Work with data services administrators to develop the data objects and data models to support data services in service-oriented architecture
  • Formulate and deliver a data warehouse strategy consistent with the requirements of MPS’ business objectives
  • Create and provide an optimal and best-in-class analytics and reporting capability with the right distribution channels with the right actionable insights
  • Validation routines, developed in conjunction with data analysts, to ensure the accuracy of data and its appropriate use relative to specific compliance issues.

 

 

MAIN JOB REQUIREMENTS AND PERSON SPECIFICATION

 

 

Specific Experience:  Management Proficiency, Analyzing Information , Informing Others, Staffing, Coordination, Tracking Budget Expenses, Handles Pressure, Reporting Skills, Scheduling, Dealing with Complexity.

Required
 

  • Ability to line manage and monitor staff with a calm and compassionate approach
  • Ability to support change through the effective management and positioning of a theory or concept
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to efficiently present to a varied audience
  • Microsoft SQL Server Experience, including SQL Server 2012 and ideally up to SQL Server 2014, with knowledge of differences in all versions and across all SQL Server editions
  • Expert level knowledge of MS SQL Server (writing queries, stored procedures, performance tuning, etc.), ETL design, processes, strategy and architecture
  • At least 5 years’ experience in SQL development
  • Proven experience developing bespoke Data Warehouses/Databases throughout the full development lifecycle
  • Knowledge of SSRS, SSIS and SSAS
  • Data Warehouse, Data Management, Business Intelligence, and Dashboard background, Share Point, Performance Point Server, Power Pivot and Power View, and Microsoft Office2013.

  • Ability to quickly assimilate knowledge from outside own area of expertise
  • Is pragmatic, able to balance business needs with the needs of security and data protection
  • Experience with Hadoop and big data
  • Certification for MS SQL server.

  • User base circa 900
  • Circa 400 terminals / users connected through a VDI infrastructure spread across 3 sites to a VMware View (Horizon 5.x) environment
  • Approximately 500 laptop users using Windows 7, centrally- configured/managed using VMware Mirage
  • Current Microsoft technologies including Windows Server 2012 migration, Exchange 2010, CRM 2011 and SQL 2012 including clustering and web farm load balancing hosted on VMware5.x architecture.
  • Circa 250 servers running on a VMware virtualised platform
  • Redundant Wide Area VPLS network connecting three UK based sites.
  • Dual 1GB links Leeds and London for BCP purpose.
  • IBM i v7r1 on an IBM System i, with 3 partitions (Live, Test and Development), replicated onto similar machine, with single partition for HA. (To be decommissioned).

 

Large implementation to deliver a new Members’ Sales / Servicing system for UK and International Members and Groups. Improve the Member experience through supporting multi-channel access and efficient self-service processes, integrated front / back-end and case management systems. Deliver seamless Member and staff processes, ensuring the security and integrity of information. Implementation will increase terminal, laptops and infrastructure exponentially with an expected additional 180 servers. Significant Data Warehouse implementation and greater architectural complexity, integrating existing / new applications and Member self-service.
