In-country Medicolegal Consultant (MLC) - Cape Town
Job Introduction
The Member Protection and Support Division is at the forefront of protecting the careers, reputations and financial risk of our members worldwide. The purpose of this new role is to provide an array of trusted and valued medicolegal services locally to our members.
In 2019 we made the decision to move closer to our members and as such we are recruiting a team of highly skilled and knowledgeable medicolegal consultants in South Africa for the first time. This is an exciting opportunity for doctors with a demonstrable interest in medicolegal work to become involved in assisting our members as we move our South African medicolegal services to South Africa.
Role Responsibility
The primary purpose of the role is to provide medicolegal case management services. Our MLC's advise members by telephone, in correspondence and face to face, about a wide variety of medicolegal and ethical issues affecting their professional practice. This can include, but is not limited to: advice, complaints, HPCSA matters, inquests, disciplinary matters, criminal cases related to clinical care and civil claims. Complex cases often include a combination of the fore mentioned.
Outside of case management, our MLCs use their knowledge and expertise to deliver lectures, partake in Medical Protection webinars and podcasts, contribute to publications and interact with relevant stakeholders.
The MLCs will work in a multidisciplinary team alongside other case managers for whom they will act as a point of escalation, offer support, mentoring and supervision.
The Ideal Candidate
The successful candidate should be a doctor preferably with recent relevant clinical experience. They are required to have both graduate and, ideally, postgraduate medical degrees and/or diplomas and to be fully registered and licensed with the HPCSA.
A bioethics or healthcare law qualification and/or experience in mediation or a medico-legal setting would be advantageous but is not essential.
To be considered for the role you will need excellent interpersonal skills, an ability to manage conflict and challenging interactions as well as be able to demonstrate commercial awareness and operational understanding. Good communication skills are mandatory not only in a one to one setting but also to large audiences.
We are seeking a local applicant to Cape Town who can offer a 20 hour per week commitment. We require flexibility in relation to working location and hours, and we would prefer to see applications from candidates who can commit to this. Due to the current COVID19 situation, we may onboard and induct new starters remotely and offer remote working until it is appropriate to finalise the exact location and hours.
Due to the nature of these roles we may commence interviews prior to the closing date so please submit your application as soon as possible.
It is important when applying for the role that you state your Gross salary expectations based on working a 20 hour week.
This is an employment equity role
